Women’s Health Blog: Smartlipo – Does it work or is it all hype?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Smartlipo appears to be catching the fancy of Americans looking to trim down their excess fat. Smartlipo is yet another liposuction technique in which a laser is used to melt excess fat. Cynosure Inc, the US marketer of Smartlipo claims that thousands of people have undergone a Smartlipo procedure since its introduction just about a year ago.

Like traditional liposuction techniques, Smartlipo requires local anesthesia and is minimally invasive. But Smartlipo is much more expensive. So the question becomes, does Smartlipo work any better than existing procedures?

Doctors are skeptical that this laser based liposuction technique works any better than the most commonly used procedure known as tumescent liposuction.

Smartlpo claims to "liquefy the fat" making it easier to separate from the body, thus allowing plastic surgeons to better shape a person's body. Using Smartlipo laser, surgeons make small incisions in the skin where the patient's fat needs to be removed. That area is then infused with fluids including drugs which would numb that area and compress the blood vessels so that the patient doesn't have a lot of blood loss. The laser is then inserted through the cuts and the fat that it melts is siphoned out through tubes.

The difference between Smartlipo and tumescent liposuction is that there is no laser involved in tumescent liposuction. In Tumescent liposuction, surgeons use instruments called cannulas which help loosen the body fat. Once the fat loosens, surgeons suction the fat out of the body.

When comparing Smartlipo to a more traditional liposuction technique, surgeons and patients can perhaps agree that Smartlipo is perhaps more advantageous. That's because in traditional liposuction, patients are put to sleep using general anesthesia and surgeons remove large amounts of fat. Anytime general anesthesia is used, the surgery becomes more risky and also patients may require longer periods of time to recover. With tumescent liposuction and Smartlipo, the recovery time is very small and general anesthesia is not used.

Thus far, there is no clear cut advantage for using Smartlipo except for the fact that it uses a laser.  Only time will tell if Smartlipo will become the standard for liposuction techniques.

Bo-Tax (Cosmetic Tax) – hmmmm

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The Health Care Bill being debated in the Senate has a line-item for a 5 % tax on cosmetic surgery. It’s called Bo-Tax in honor of Botox; a popular wrinkle reduction cosmetic procedure.

This Bo-Tax then would only be levied on “cosmetic surgery” which is considered purely a “want”. What I mean by that is that this tax would not be incurred if cosmetic surgery was required to fix deformities, injuries from accidents or burns, etc. something which is a “need” (rather than a want).

Plastic Surgeons are obviously upset.  According to the American Plastic Surgeon Society, 2008 was a banner year with about 12 million cosmetic procedures performed.  But since the recession has hit,  patients for liposuction and other cosmetic procedures have declined. So the Plastic Surgeons feel that in addition to decline due to the economic situation, a 5% tax would cause people to reconsider getting cosmetic procedures done.

I can see the point that the American Plastic Surgeons Association is making because no one wants a tax increase of any form; certainly not doctors who don’t want to lose patients due to high cost of medical procedures.

But then again, I don’t quite see the point.  That’s because I wonder if a 5% tax increase will really make patients change their minds about having cosmetic surgery which is not a need, but a want. If you are absolutely certain you want something done and if that procedure costs $1000, will adding $50 really make you decide against having that cosmetic procedure?

Women’s Health Blog – Achieving “perfect skin”

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

The CBS Early Show featured Dr. Ellen Marmur, chief of dermatology at Mt. Sinai Medical Center and another celebrity makeup artist, Cynde Watson. For perfect skin, here are some tips shared by Dr. Marmur:

  1. Keep it simple; don’t use too many potions
  2. Don’t exfoliate too much
  3. Consider fractional laser resurfacing to help with sagging skin and anti-aging
  4. Other treatments including Botox and Dysport also work well to help reduce wrinkles

Our advice? Check out the pros & cons of the treatments you are interested in. Talk to an expert, don’t just rush into a treatment because someone talked about it on television.

Skin treatments may result in side effects such as rash, white discoloration of skin, etc. and therefore it is very important to talk to qualified and experienced dermatologists who can provide you the correct advice and treatments for your skin type.

We offer many of the procedures that Dr. Marmur mentions on the CBS Early Show. Click here to learn more about our skin treatments such as chemical peels, anti-aging facials and other beauty enhancement services.
